Samoa Biogas Systems provides major biogas demonstration system at the SIDS 2014 Conference in Samoa.

BioEnceptionz head Murray Ward has been hard at work in Samoa during 2014 with our affiliate company Samoa Biogas Systems Ltd. The main effort, so far, has been to build a biogas demonstration site at the SIDS 2014 Conference

The demonstration includes showing how biogas can be used for multiple energy requirements in village communities in Samoa. The use that has captured the media’s attention is that with a biogas generator you can produce electricity that can then be used to provide a top-up charge for the electric resort-style carts that are used as people movers on the Conference grounds.

But the demonstration site also emphasizes the message that biogas is able to directly provide cooking, lighting and refrigeration, so cover the basic energy needs of rural community villages.

Later in 2014, Samoa Biogas Systems will build a 40kW biogas fueled power station at Piu Village, a small rural community. The electricity from this will be sold to the national power company. The principal feedstock for the power station will be an invasive vine called merremia. Piu Village has a very large area of its land covered by this vine. The liquid outflow from this biogas system will be a rich organic fertiliser that will provide new opportunities for Piu Village to grow and sell high value crops.

Samoa Biogas Systems is proud to work with its partners the Samoa Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, UNDP and SPREP to deliver these innovative demonstrations of biogas technology.
